Part of a picturesque, rural area recently named “one of the last great places in the Western Hemisphere...with its nearly untouched river and surrounding forests,” Haddam rests in the Connecticut River Valley, with the river forming much of the town’s western border. Richly historic, the town is composed of five quaint villages, each unique: Higganum, Tylerville, Shailerville, Hidden Lake and Haddam Neck. Haddam’s first gristmill began operating in the 1670’s, and during the next century Haddam became a favored seaport. A town poised for growth, timeless charm enjoys life at a slower pace in Haddam, where development has been unknown and more colonial-era homes survive than in Williamsburg. Over one quarter of this 46.7 mile Connecticut River town is dedicated to state forest, and Haddam’s 7,600 residents have chosen a Board of Selectmen and Town Meeting form of government.
The many educational facilities of Haddam include three Elementary Schools, an Intermediate School and the constantly growing Haddam Killingworth High School. Extracurricular activities, successful art and music programs, and organized sports are popular. There is a district-run daycare facility; private schools are available in neighboring Middletown, and Wesleyan University is just ten minutes away. The Encouraging Words Writers’ Group is one of the town’s many adult activities.
Tranquil Haddam is uniquely gifted in outdoor enjoyment of water and woods. In this unspoiled setting, even the highway is a notable scenic road. Go fishing, boating, hike forest trails, play in the parks; indulge in any activity amid memorable natural beauty. For some of the more social forms of recreation in this intimate community, gather for concerts on the Village Green, browse or participate during Haddam River Days, or help the Historical Society keep the gardens green at the Thankful Arnold house.
Ten minutes from Middletown, twenty minutes from the Long Island Sound shoreline, and a half hour from New Haven and Hartford, Haddam is accessible by scenic Route 154 and Route 82.
